It’s time for the monthly book club recommendation for those of you looking to expand your knowledge of trading and the finance industry. This months book is another bestseller and easily one of the best finance/business books I have ever read.
This months book recommendation is Barbarians At The Gate by Bryan Burrough & John Helyar.
Barbarians At The Gate is a proper business “thriller” and tells the story of the battle for control of RJR Nabisco that ended up being the largest corporate takeover in global history.
For those of you interested in the world of banking and finance, this book is now of the most interesting reads you will find and shows how big the Wall Street greed had become in the nineteen eighties. The leverage buyout of RJR Nabisco was eventually closed for a total of over $31 billion dollars which is a huge sum of money and would be almost $100 billion in todays markets (adjusted for inflation).
The story is made infinitely better by the battle that occurred over the 2 months towards the end of 1989 when multiple buyers were fighting for control.
I also love how the authors of this book were able to explain all the processes and details surrounding leveraged buyouts and corporate takeovers in an easy to understand way. They take what could be considered a very boring story and turn it in to a page turning thriller.
It’s a bit of a beast at nearly 600 pages but it is pure gold. Old but gold!
